I bought this as a replacement for the Toshiba TR-200 that I have been using for a couple of years, and did an outstanding job. By reading the Kioxia blurb I was under the impression this was a continuation of the TR-200 range under the Kioxia name, but alas this SDD, behaves quite differently. It has about 20% less throughput than the Toshiba predecessor but is 40 to 60 % faster on random reads.

Since I am using this in a personal computer rather than a server, this is fine, a noticeable improvement in fact and combined with the very keen price on the 480GB part, I am overall very happy.

I bought this Kioxia Exceria 240GB SATA SSD to replace the OEM 7200rpm HDD in a new / old stock Lenovo ThinkCentre M72e Tiny PC from 2012, which only has a SATA II interface. Still, I hoped that I’d see some performance improvment from the SSD, even though it would be limited to SATA II transfer rates.

The drive is solidly built, with a tightly-manufactured pressed-metal casing rather than the plastic often found on budget (and even some mid-range) devices. It looks and feels like a quality product, which is impressive considering the price. Fitting it was easy, as it’s a perfect drop-in replacement for a 2.5″ HDD. Upon booting up, it was immediately recognised by the BIOS. Installation of the Ubuntu Mate 20.04 LTS operating system was brisk and trouble-free, confirming backwards compatibility with SATA II.

So, has it improved the performance? Yes, it has… significantly! It has transformed a modest-spec, nine-year-old PC into a surprisingly zippy little machine (and a somewhat quieter one, too) that’s perfect for web-browsing, watching YouTube, editing documents and spreadsheets, and programming. I can’t verify Kioxia’s performance claims due to the PC’s SATA II interface limitations, but I can say it’s a darned sight faster than the old 7200rpm HDD. Time will tell whether it’s reliable, but given the obvious quality of manufacture externally, I’m quite hopeful.

I’m sure there are better choices for those with a considerably larger budget, but all I wanted was a decent, inexpensive SSD to perk up my older-specification PC. This Kioxia Exceria seems well-respected, and does the job nicely at a very pocket-friendly price.

    What i like:
    * at time of purchase (Dec 2020) it was the cheapest 250gb~ drive in stock
    * Great build – sometimes you get a nice brand name one which is made of rather flimsy plastic
8 Excellent performance when used with SATA connection and USB 3 5Gbps dongle
    * mainly used for testing of Linux distributions and cant complain with performance

    What i dislike:
    *nothing – its been great

Great performing SSD. The brand was formerly Toshiba Memory Corporation, which was why i went for this brand over the others, as well as it being the cheapest in the capacity of range of 240/256GB.

My wife’s laptop has been her trusty tool for the last 3 years, through the last 2 years of her degree and into the last year, as a reliable and consistent workhorse while working remotely.

However it has never been quick, and while she finds it easy to use, I find it maddening. It’s a basic productivity machine, with a Intel Pentium Gold processor and a low 4GB of ram so fits the bill of her needs, but it’s not exactly a powerhouse!

Over the past 3 months, even she is starting to get frustrated with the speed aspect, but didn’t want a new laptop as she can touchtype on her machine with her eyes closed and it’s never let her down. So I was tasked with making a few budget upgrades to return it to the best it can be.

Firstly I upgraded it to 8GB of DDR3 1600mhz ram for just under £28. This improved things somewhat but having checked the hard drive speeds, they were well below expectations, even after defragging and clean up.

So I turned to a SSD, which is a minefield at this moment in time. With the current semiconductor shortage and the obscene mark ups of memory products, there’s a very fine line between unknown brands with next to no providence or tech support and the big boys in the industry such as SanDisk and WD.

However I stumbled onto the listing for Kioxia, which I initially mistook as another unknown brand, but looking into it, I realised it was the spin off brand of Toshiba Memory Europe who back up this drive with 3 years warranty! Colour me surprised. At the time of purchase, this model in 240GB guise, cost £24. So far a very cost effective upgrade

Fast forward to installation, which went as expected, and a clone of the laptops hard drive to this SSD, which went perfectly with no unexpected issues.

Now, I’m not going to throw up benchmarks, as many on here have effectively covered those. But from an objective standpoint, it’s night and day compared to the old HDD.

Previously, it took 6 mins from power on to being usable. After replacement, with a direct clone of the same data and files, from power on to fully loaded windows, it now takes 25 seconds. MS Office took 35 seconds to open previously, it took 3 seconds after the upgrade. This very impressive. It can now handle multiple files being read and written without grinding to a halt, that’s all we asked for.

If you are looking for a well priced, simple laptop upgrade, don’t want to spend much money & wish to breathe a little more life into a old machine, I’d recommend it without question.

As a side note, I’d recommend downloading the Kioxia utility programme from their website. This gives a lot of useful information such as drive temperature (high heat Is a SSD killer), memory estimated lifespan and error correction, which is always very helpful.

I hope this review helps you, especially if this is your first experience with this sort of item. If it did, please hit the helpful button and let me know. Stay safe and well everyone!

I spent hours trying to get this to be recognised by my system. I had previously installed a SanDisk which has worked well but running out of space. I expected that this SSD would be recognised on boot up , could then be formatted and data transferred. Even with the help of the Koxia technical support I could not get it to work, they said it was old. The system could see it but could not address it. Amazon description does not say it is not backwards compatible. You buy these devices to give your old machines a new lease of life.
