My 9 year old Samsung 830 SSD, used solely as operating system drive, was running out of space. Windows Search’s database (a lifesaver for me) was approaching 60GB in size pushing my small 128GB SSD near its capacity limits. The 830’s performance was still rock solid and its health was at 80% after 9 years of almost daily use. So decided to purchase this 1TB Samsung Evo 870.
Cloning
I used Samsung’s disk cloning tool to migrate the operating system. This caused me some stress. I noticed not all files were copied. Specifically: my Outlook PST files and Windows’ search database were missing. I worried system files might also have failed to clone so undertook a set of windows checks using SFC and DISM. They all came out clean. Turns out, if you use Samsung’s software, you need to ensure all programs are closed (my Outlook was – but a tray icon was still running probably locking the PST files) and if you want Windows Search databases copied, you must temporarily disable Windows Search. Wish this had been clearer upfront which would have avoided my rebuilding the Search database.
Then came the SSD writes shock
After checking the drive for issues with Samsung Magician, cloning the OS, and completing a tests with UserBenchmark, I was shocked to discover that in 15 Power on Hours (PoH) I had already eaten through 306 GB of SSD writes! The drive was new with 0 GB writes, how could this be possible? At this rate, it was going to last 3.4 years with 24/7 use.
I thought something was wrong with the drive so began recording SSD writes vs. PoH and testing different scenarios.
First, I moved Windows’ swap file to a 12TB HGST helium drive. This instantly ‘fixed’ the SSD writes and I incorrectly concluded Windows was chewing up my drive. Spent a few days reading up about the problem and trying to figure out solutions.
I then decided to test my PC again with UserBenchmark to see what impact having a swap file on a separate HDD was having. I could not believe it: one test burnt off 30GB in SSD writes!! So the culprit was not Windows but the five or six UserBenchmark tests I had completed after cloning the drive.
I placed the swap file back onto my C: drive and sure enough SSD writes were not increasing at alarming rates. I also read that Windows will not let HDDs with a swapfile spin down and sleep, so another reason to leave the swap file on the SSD.
Thanks to all the data points I recorded, I can now estimate that this drive will last 35.4 years powered on continuously, or 102.8 years at the rate that I am using my computer.
So a highly recommend from me.

What’s not to like?
The drive is well packed safely by Amazon and delivered promptly (thanks to prime). This 1tb drive does format to around 900gb after formatting so be aware of that. It will allow me to transfer my wife’s operating system and bring her laptop up to speed. A quality SSD is one of the best ways to do this, and with a five year warranty who can argue with that?
The storage capacity compared to cost is amazing and the drive is easy to install as it fits into the laptops existing drive bay. I also have this 1tb drive as my PC boot disk and windows 10 loads up and is ready for gaming or work within twenty seconds. Samsung also offer free drive transfer and management software on their site free of charge, it worked perfectly well (just make sure you chkdsk your exisiting drives first as you’ll thank me after).
For the price and branded name of samsung, and peace of mind of a five year warranty it’s a steal!

Non parlo di prestazioni e test perché non ho le competenze per farlo, parlo nelle vesti di un utente che ci capisce ben poco ed è in possesso di un notebook sul quale risulta necessario sostituire l’hard disk per riportare il pc a nuova vita.
Con questo cosa intendo dire…che una volta individuato questo SSD Samsung (in questo caso è stato necessario il consiglio di un amico competente in materia) le operazioni di copia del vecchio HHD con sistema operativo e di installazione fisica del nuovo disco sono state davvero accessibili anche per me che non ho dimestichezza con questa roba. In pochissimo tempo ho svolto le due operazioni riportando il pc a prestazioni ottimali.
Per la copia ho usato il software di Samsung – scaricabile dal sito – Data Migration.
Per il resto, spedizione top di Amazon, prodotto arrivato in perfette condizioni.

Questa unita’ SSD è un ottimo compromesso di velocità e affidabilità, mantenendo una fascia di prezzo abbastanza conveniente.
Nel mio caso ho preso il taglio da un TeraByte , per non avere problemi di spazio in futuro, al momento è più che sufficiente (ne avevo già una da 500 GB ma iniziava ad andarmi stretta con i dual boot etc.).
Le performance e la durata non sono ai massimi livelli, come la linea Samsung PRO, ma ci si avvicinano molto, mantenendo prezzi più accessibili.
In conclusione direi che, salvo per usi strettamente professionali (con scritture massive) è superfluo ricorrere alla line PRO, mentre la linea QVO è leggermente più conveniente, ma la durata garantita è inferiore, pertanto ritengo la linea EVO il migliore compromesso prezzo/qualità/affidabilità/prestazioni nell’uso comune..

Sostituito su un ACER Core i7 quad-core, 8 GB RAM DDR3, HDD WD 640 GB Scorpio Blue, Windows 7 Home Prem. 64 Bit ; notebook già veloce di suo. Ero curioso di vederlo lavorare con un SSD Samsung da 1 TB…risultato? Lieve aumento di velocità (quasi impercettibile) dovuto purtroppo al mio PC che supporta solo SATA 2 e non SATA 3 (PC datato 2011) L’EVO 870 è un SSD di ultima generazione SATA 3, le velocità dichiarate si riferiscono a questo protocollo, la retrocompatibilità è assicurata ma ovviamente le velocità crollano: con SATA 2 si dimezzano, con SATA 1 diventano 1/4 (con SATA 1 potete anche evitare di installare un SSD dato che rallenta ai livelli di un classico HDD), quindi per capire che tipo di miglioramento prestazionale avrete con un SSD verificate il tipo di connessione SATA del vostro PC, se è già un SATA 3 avrete il max delle velocità, in caso contrario dovrete accontentarvi! In compenso ho riscontrato una piacevole “silenziosità” nell’utilizzo del notebook (si avverte solo il leggero soffio della ventola di raffreddamento). Come si nota dalle foto l’EVO 870 è “made in Korea” (come Samsung) e non “made in Cina” -solo una gradita curiosità- 1TB è un bel taglio per un notebook di fascia medio-alta, ho eseguito la clonazione con Macrium Reflect Free (ottimo) e cavo USB 3.0/SATA Sabrent espandendo la partizione logica. Concludendo l’EVO 870 1TB costa un po’ di più della concorrenza ma è veramente un ottimo SSD con 5 anni di garanzia e ben 600 TBW (Terabytes Written) sulla capienza di 1 TB. E’ dura battere Samsung sugli SSD, hanno acquisito negli anni un know-how enorme. Spedito da Amazon in 2 giorni, venduto da Digitem, imballo perfetto.
EDIT del 17/01/22 : consiglio l’upgrade con il nuovo firmware ISO SVT02B6Q rilasciato da Samsung di recente e scaricabile dal sito ufficiale. Dopo 9 mesi dall’acquisto ed un utilizzo semi-intensivo non ho riscontrato nessun tipo di problema, lo ricomprerei senza esitare.

I have an HP EliteBook 840 that originally came with a small 128GB SSD. Back in November, I bought a 1TB Crucial MX500 SSD as an upgrade – as it was in an Amazon “Lightning” deal.
While the initial signs were good, it suddenly slowed down and Windows 10 would scan for (and fix) disk errors on every boot. I suspect this was due to the diabolical Crucial SSD ‘Storage Executive’ software and its ‘Momentum Cache’ feature. Anyway, the disk is en route back to Amazon and I temporarily popped in an HDD.
Rather than purchasing based on price, I have now opted for a quality Samsung SSD – and this new 870 EVO 1TB model looked good. Indeed, for me, it was the correct choice!
I used a caddy and Paradigm Hard Disk Manager 17 to clone the current HDD (I had no need of the cloning software available from Samsung). I popped it into laptop and away we went with no issues. I downloaded and installed Samsung Magician 6.3 – and enabled “Over Provisioning”. As such, the laptop in normal operation really flies! I have shown the Samsung benchmark results and also the “Smart” information – confirming a new SSD with no errors.
With all of the ‘external’ buffering and caching (in Samsung Magician) turned off, CrystalDiskMark confirms the SSD performs at the maximum capacity of a SATA-III interface for both reads and writes – within the limitations of its own cache. Even with very large files, ‘raw’ transfer speeds (~360Mbps) are excellent for a SSD of this type.
The device remains relatively cool even during intensive use. Usually it sits at about 32degC and doesn’t ever exceed 40. So, I have no complaints there!
I opted for this SSD over the cheaper Samsung 870 QVO device and think I made the correct decision – given the consistent operating characteristics and life expectancy, the extra few pounds were well worth it!
I have used a Samsung 840 EVO in another laptop error free for years. I’m hoping this one will be as good. Fingers crossed 🤞
A 5 year warranty gives added confidence.
As a side note. The latest Samsung Magician software package is an excellent utility – and is compatible with all of the more advanced features of this excellent SSD.
Unlike some other reviewers, my SSD was sold and shipped by Amazon in the UK – so I incurred no extra charges.
Taking it Easy –
Bought this after checking on-line reviews of the Samsung cloning software. I wish I hadn’t bothered.
1) Samsung’s Data Migration software is simple to use after downloading it and uninstalling any anti-virus software you have on your PC.
2) everything seemed to “clone” from the old HDD after about 4 hours. The PC automatically closed down (as described in the Data Migration instructions.)
3) installed new SSD in PC in place of old HDD and turned PC on – no joy
4) swapped back to old HDD and everything back to normal. Connected SSD to PC to check its installed files – nothing – 0 bytes. Tried “disc management” – 0 bytes. Tried Samsungs “Magic” software – it identified the SSD – 0 bytes.
5) Diagnosis – One dead SSD
6) called Samsung support – was told I have to call Samsung in Holland at my cost (from the UK) and would have to call between 9am and 5pm Mon to Fri. Pain in the arse.
7) Called Amazon technical support – Thankfully Amazon stepped in and sorted the situation out with a full refund.
8) Lessons learnt – Samsung customer service is very poor, and SSD is fragile. Avoid.

Dopo tanti anni ho deciso di cambiare l’HDD del mio portatile (la velocità di lettura e scrittura è nella seconda foto, quella con valori bassissimi).
Ho preso quest’ultimo modello Samsung perché l’860 EVO è stato un top di gamma e l’870 migliora leggermente le prestazioni e per il software d’analisi incluso, Magician, ottimo strumento per la manutenzione che analizza la salute del prodotto cella per cella.
AFFIDABILITÀ: Sulla confezione si garantivano 560MB/s in lettura e 530MB/s in scrittura e da come potete vedere dalla foto sono valori rispettati, anche dopo 1 settimanda di uso assiduo (il benchmark di Magician si è tenuto un pò più stretto di valori a volte, avrebbero potuto usare parametri che gonfiavano i numeri ma sono molto onesti. Brava Samsung)
VELOCITÀ: il pc prima impiegava anche 5 minuti ad accendersi, e comunque per un bel po’ rimaneva quel fastidioso collo di bottiglia di 100% in prestazioni disco. Ora il pc si accende, si spegne, apre le applicazioni tutto in una manciata di secondi ed è subito operativo. Anche lo stress sulla RAM è diminuito.
TEMPERATURA: In inattività la temperatura si attesta sui 30°, dopo uno stress test di 5h, la temeratura ha raggiunto un massimo di 41°. Personalmente soddisfatto.
CLONAZIONE DATI: Per la migrazione dei dati mi sono dotato di un cavo SATA-USB 3.0 (mi raccomando il 3.0 se ne avete la possibilità, soprattutto per migrazioni di tanti dati pesanti. Io 600GB di dati li ho copiati sull’SSD in 3 ore abbondanti. Con un USB 2.0 sarei stato come minimo mezza giornata) e del software Samsung Data Migration, ottimizzato per la clonazione da/a una memoria Samsung. Il software è molto user friendly (allego foto), come anche Samsung Magician. È stato molto comodo anche perché prima di procedere masterizza in automatico la memoria clonante.
SOSTITUZIONE MEMORIA: Il libretto di istruzioni in italiano spiega esplicativamente anche con immagini come dovevo procedere nella sostituzione del mio HDD, aggiungerei solo dei consigli di preparazione a questa operazione come l’ottimizzazione e la frammentazione della memoria e ovviamente il backup e la pulizia di file inutili e temporanei (per i lettori meno digitali rimando questi argomenti a qualche tutorial su internet). Le viti non sono incluse, ma nel mio caso ho riusato quelle della memoria precedente.
AVVERTENZE: se volete cambiare il vostro HDD quasi pieno con questo SSD vi consiglio di prendere “una taglia più grande”. Sia per motivi tecnici (con una memoria piena si ha una amplificazione delle scritture, non ho testato né conosco l’algoritmo di Samsung che affronta questo problema tipico delle SSD), sia perchè personalmente con la migrazione i dati sulla SSD occupano circa il 5% di spazio in più.
