ASUS PRIME Z690M-PLUS D4

Una motherboard per LGA 1200 sobria, senza fronzoli, ovviamente una super entry level, però ha gia il supporto per i processori intel di 11esima generazione e per il PCIe 4.0.
Sul retro il backplate fa un po’ pietà, praticamente mi ricorda quello delle schede economiche di 20 anni fa, un pezzo di alluminio stile Cuki e la scheda audio é una realtek sconosciuta di bassa lega, però vabè! La confezione contiene solo 2 cavi Sata e qualche vite per l’NVMe, praticamente spartana, la scheda si trova nella busta antistatica con solo un misero cartoncino che la “protegge”, qui avrei preferito trovare un po di polistirolo, quello grigio scuro per intenderci, anche perché l’imballaggio di Amazon, nonostante fosse intatto, all’interno aveva solo un po’ di carta stropicciata e poteva benissimo danneggiarsi.
Nel complesso il prodotto vale i soldi spesi, anche se consiglierei, per chi é attento ai dettagli, di passare direttamente alla z590-A. Montata in un case Nzxt H510 elite fa la sua bella figura nonostante l’estrema sobrietà.
Vi aggiornerò in caso di malfunzionamenti. Attualmente, come tutti sono costretto ad utilizzare un intel di 10ima generazione, quindi viaggio in PCIe 3.0.
Appena possibile passero ad un i7 di 11esima generazione per sfruttare appieno le sue potenzialità.

Uso per lavori in 3d e gioco.

I’ve been using the mATX-Plus series for a while (Z170M, Z390M, etc.) and they are all pretty similar, but Asus do keep adding some features that may come useful even comparing with old boards.

If you’re after a powerful but somewhat small system thus mATX format and 11th gen CPU (thus with hardware fixes for (current) vulnerabilities) and fast (4600Mbps+) memory then this is pretty cheap and nice board. For me it works great with 11700K and 3200 DDR4. Yes it goes higher but I have no current need.

But if you’re going for a top-end 11900K perhaps mATX is a bit too cramped, best go for full ATX. If you’re not overclocking then save money and go for H570M, B560M that are much cheaper but have smaller heatsinks for VRM and VRM phases, etc.

The Good:

– 2x PCIe x16 length slots, but only one x16 (for dedicated GPU PCIe 4.0) and 2nd PCIe 3.0 x4 for say 10Gbe LAN or more SSDs.
– 1x PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot for fast SSD + 2x PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slots for more SSDs. Can have an all NVMe system with say 1 boot/cache and 2 RAID1 for programs/data.
– 1x PCIe 3.0 x1 M.2 slot for WiFi/BT (e.g. Intel AX200/210) and I/O shield has optional holes for SMA antenna sockets should you want.
– 3x PWM FAN headers (+CPU) thus pretty good control of modern fans
– RGB header if you want to bling your case or fans, both standard RGB and individually addressable.
– Supports both ME/PTT TPM and discrete TPM (Infineon?) for full disk crypto/BitLocker, etc.
– Obviously unlocked due to Z590 chipset – if you need for overclocking.
– The USB-C port is back (missing in Z390M series).

The mediocre:
– Being just “Prime” there are no heatsinks for M.2 slots – so budget on getting some as NVMe SSDs run very hot (especially PCIe 4.0) – they don’t need to be expensive.
– Layout is naturally quite cramped, e.g. many fan connectors very top of board where some cases may not allow easy access to connect fan cables.
– WiFi/BT M.2 slot underneath one SSD M.2 slot making it quite challenging to use + possible heat issues.
– HDMI supports version 2.0 only on 11th Gen but I guess no surprise.
– Any point in having DVI anymore?
– Any point in having discrete TPM socket?
– No header for USB 3.1/2 case ports.

The Bad:
– BIOS based “Armoury Crate” (ex Q-Installer) that auto-installs as a Windows service that you cannot disable in Windows (being part of BIOS/firmware). Thankfully you can disable in BIOS. Still bad injection vector.
– Ethernet only 1Gbe not 2.5Gbe which is quite disappointing for a Z590 board.
– Samsung NVMe hardware crypto still does not engage despite being E1667 compliant. So far I only have luck with Lenovo laptops. Its a pity as you incur the overhead of software crypto that the SSD itself can manage.

Asus BIOS is also easy to mod say if you wanted to add SLIC or other features but remember you need to extract the capsule. Asus seems reliable to me still have an old Z170M, Z390M (thus older versions of this) that works perfectly still.

Price-wise it does seem more expensive than the competition but then Asus has always been so; feature-wise it is OK but still “Prime” is not high-end like Strix/ROG but decent. Kind of middle of the road I’d say.

Tra le schede di undicesima generazione è una tra le più economiche, senza rinunciare alla qualità e alle ‘performances’. Ottimamente equipaggiata di porte USB anche di ultimo tipo, ha ben 3 slot per dischi M2, dei quali uno adatto ai nuovi dischi 4×4 per raggiungere velocità fino a 7 gb/s !!!

Ottima scheda madre, dopo averla montata (aggiornamento PC esistente) segnalo alcune cose magari non ovvie:
– Ha sia “Firmware TPM” che uno zoccolo per TPM SPI dedicato (se presente, nel BIOS è preimpostato quello)
– Comodi i numerosi alloggiamenti M.2, ma non mi sarebbe dispiaciuto avere 6 invece di 4 connettori SATA
– Una sola presa USB C sul retro (peraltro coperta dalle linguette della mascherina, se non si fa attenzione a piegarle in fase di montaggio)
– Il connettore HDMI è abbastanza al limite della mascherina, su alcuni case i connettori grossi (quelli dei cavi più lunghi) entrano a fatica o non entrano proprio
– A novembre 2021 i vari driver Intel (chiset, video, ecc.) vanno ancora scaricati (Windows 10 ancora non riconosce quasi nulla, quindi si parte con video ridotto, ecc. – per risolvere basta far puntare a Device Manager la cartella con gli ZIP estratti dal sito Asus, se come nel mio caso si preferisce non usare gli installer Asus per i file Intel)

I always stick to asus and this didn’t disappoint. Arrive quick, anstalled ok and running like a dream. One very slight negative is that the box was not sealed but still 5 stars.

Non è il massimo (es. la placca posteriore delle connessioni), spartana. Però con un Intel I9 10900k e un M.2 Nmve 4.0 da 2 Tb anche se non montata nella sua sede prevista con la piastrina raffreddante (dissipatore) ma su una delle due espazioni, il tutto funziona in modo accettabile per il mio uso prevalente (montaggi video 4k). Non so perchè non funziona bene la M.2 nella sua sede primaria (modificare nell’UEFI-Bios l’unità di boot.).
